Protect yourself and home from lightning

When I was very young I remember standing at a large plate glass window in the living room and seeing a flash of lightning.
It was dramatic and frightening to my 5-year-old senses and the thunderclap that followed a moment later caused me to run from the living room to the kitchen, where my mother was standing, looking out at the rain pelting the kitchen window.
“I love a good storm,” she said to me. “It’s fun.”
I shook my head in bewilderment.
“As long as we are inside, safe, we are fine,” she reassured me.
