Because of an emergency directive mandating anyone inside county courthouses must wear a face covering, Clay County Commissioners have changed the venue for Thursday’s meeting.

Commission Chairman Rob Peck confirmed the reason for the move. “In accordance with the July 16 directive of Cheri Beasley, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of North Carolina and with respect to such directive, the Clay County Board of Commissioners has decided to move its Thursday, July 23 meeting from the Clay County Courthouse multi-purpose room to the Clay County Department of Social Services conference room.”

Peck went on to say, “This decision shows mutual respect for the fact that some individuals can not wear masks due to underlying health conditions while others  reserve the right to make a personal decision with regards to making. Commissioners will not disenfranchise those who would like to attend but would be unable to due to the new directive.”

While commissioners have not worn masks at previous commission meetings during the COVID-29 outbreak, Peck said masks will be available for those who attend and do not have one, but choose to wear one.

“As has been the case since the onset of COVID-19 social distancing will be practiced amongst the staff and general public,” he  said.

In announcing the directive on July 17, Chief Justice Beasley said these and other emergency directives are calculated to reduced the spread of COVID-19 in North Carolina’s communities.

“Consistent with the Governor’s recommendations and the clear guidance of public health experts, requiring face coverings in courthouses is necessary to keep our courts open while protecting court personnel and the public.”

In addition, Beasley said all jury trials will be delayed at least through September allowing courts time to come up with a safety plan, according to a news release.
